At CBE Yachad, we seek to develop
“Jewish and Hebrew cultural fluency” and a comfort with Modern Hebrew fluency.
This “cultural fluency” includes learning to decode Hebrew and to read and
participate in tefilot in most liberal/progressive congregations. The
development of comfort with Modern Hebrew fluency seeks to encourage our
community members to engage with Israeli and World Jewish culture and to be
inspired to continue to learn Hebrew beyond their time in our program.
Hebrew Learning at CBE Yachad
will be divided into four sections, which will vary in proportion as children
progress through the program from year to year:
1. Reading
and writing skills: letters and vowels recognition, reading fluent texts and
writing print.
2. Modern
Hebrew skills- periods of Hebrew immersion, classroom words and expression and
basic language structure understanding.
3. Prayer
book and “Cultural” Hebrew:
a. Understanding
the themes and key words in the core prayer service.
b. Understanding
key vocabulary in Hebrew and Yiddish that allow for participation in Jewish
community life and culture, e.g. “mitzvah,” “aliyah,” “hechsher,” “derekh
eretz,” “daven,” “bensch,” “siddur”.
4. Torah
and Haftarah Cantillation (Introduction to “Trope”).
