Evolution & Revolution in the Music of Jewish Worship Print
From Tuesday, January 09 2007
To Tuesday, January 30 2007
7:30pm - 9:00pm Tuesday of each week

The past thirty years have seen extraordinary diversification in Jewish worship styles, particularly in the music of worship. Congregations continually debate melodies, the use of instruments, and texts to sing. These choices are not made in a vacuum but in the context of broader decisions. Listen to some of the music being revived, discarded, created, and experimented with. Explore the insights Jewish musicologists provide to the ways music functions, both in the service and as a symbol of the personal cultural values and preferences of Jews. This course picks up where Cantor Josee Wolff left off in her popular 2005 lecture, "Who Stole My Tune: A Century of Change in Reform Music."

Location: Temple House
Contact: Cantor Janet Leuchter
