Women in Israeli Society

The egalitarian ideology of the kibbutz, the military conscription of women alongside men, and Golda Meir's career have all contributed to the image of Israel as a uniquely gender-equal nation. Was Meir the exception or the rule? What was the status of women in the early Zionist movement? What is their status in Israel today? We'll address these questions in an effort to understand the complex factors that have molded gender ideals and gender relations in contemporary Israeli society.
