This month's book is Sunday Jews, by Hortense Calisher.
This family saga set in New York’s Upper West Side tells the story of Peter Duffy, who is of Irish descent, his wife Zipporah Zangwill and their five offspring. Although, on the surface, it reads a bit like a soap opera, the book is also a thoughtful meditation on the inheritance and development of religious, cultural, familial and individual identity and should provide a springboard for a lively discussion of what it means to identify as and be identified as a Jew in contemporary America, among other topics.
Next book discussion will be
