Darkness at Noon

by Arthur Koestler

This much lauded novel tells the story of an idealistic old Bolshevik, Rubashov, who becomes a victim of Stalinist terror. Imprisoned and forced to confess to crimes against the state of which he is not guilty, Rubashov begins to recognize that he is guilty of having worked for and supported the expansion of a system that has been the source of a tremendous amount of cruelty and suffering. This event is rescheduled from April, when only three people showed up for the discussion. However, those who came felt that this was an outstanding book and worthy of a thoughtful discussion from a wide variety of perspectives. Although this book was written in the late 1930s, Koestler raises a host of issues that have contemporary resonance.
