Using the traditional style of hevruta (paired learning), this class will provide basic skills for engaging one of the most revered texts in the Jewish tradition–the Talmud. We will begin with its first tractate, Berakhot (prayers), which includes rabbinic ideas about the origins and meanings of prayers as well as a classic rabbinic attempt to grapple with the question of why bad things happen to good people. Hevruta-style learning encourages participants to meet together in like skill-level groups of 2 or 3 to read and discuss the text together. Students of all levels and backgrounds are encouraged to join us.
