The Bible and Ancient Near Eastern Semitic Literature
Ever since the discovery in 1872 by George Smith of the Gilgamesh
tablets, which contain an ancient Mesopotamian story of a flood,
readers of the Bible have noticed intriguing similarities between biblical literature and
the literature of other ancient near eastern Semitic cultures. In this
course, we will study important texts from the cultures surrounding
biblical Israel and use them to explore how and why the Bible imitates,
adapts and alters them. Among the texts we will read are the Atrahasis
and Enuma Elish myths of creation, prophetic texts from Egypt and Mari,
the Law Code of Hamurabi, and The Hymn to Aton.
