More than two thousand years ago, long before the destruction of the 2nd Temple by the Romans in 70 AD, the early Rabbis were already laying the intellectual groundwork for the development of a post-Biblical Judaism. Without this critical move, Judaism may very well have ceased to exist. However, the remarkable adaptability of our ancestors yielded a new set of perspectives on Judaism that has endured to the present day.

This course will examine several foundational texts of Jewish life and thought as they began to be articulated in this time period: from the Torah, Prophets and Writings, as well as early fundamental ideas in rabbinic interpretation and the development of the Prayerbook.

No Hebrew knowledge is required for this class.

Rabbis Andy Bachman (on Saturdays, 9am) and Daniel Bronstein (on Thursdays, 7:30pm)
