The Rise and Fall of the Bagel Union
Food writer Matthew Goodman, author of the book Jewish Food: The World at Table and writer-producer of a forthcoming film on the history of the International Bagel Bakers’ Union in America, will present the fascinating and little-known history of the Union. For decades, the Union’s bakers produced every bagel made in New York City -- until the mid-1960s, when the combination of frozen bagels and the bagel-making machine destroyed the Union. The story of the Bagel Union tells a larger story of the labor movement, of the development of technology, and Jewish American culture.
