POWER AND
POWERLESSNESS IN JEWISH HISTORY
by David Biale
The powerlessness of Jews,
whether real or perceived, has long been a theme in the study of Jewish
history. More than 20 years ago, historian David Biale reexamined this
premise in his now-classic book Power and Powerlessness in Jewish
History. Beginning his study in antiquity and continuing through
the 1980s, Biale offers still controversial and unique interpretations
of the Jewish people's relative "power" or "powerlessness"
through the prism of political, social and religious history.
