Tierney Gearon: The Mother Project
Directed by Peter Sutherland and Jack Youngelson
Photographer Tierney Gearon came to
notorious fame in 2001 when photos of her own naked and masked children
in the I Am a Camera
show at London’s Saatchi Gallery had authorities threatening child
pornography charges. Filmmakers Peter Sutherland and Jack Youngelson (who will attend the © Tierney Gearon screening at CBE)
follow this exceptional artist over the course of three years as she
assembles her most daring and emotionally complex body of work to date:
a series on her manic-depressive schizophrenic mother, who resides in Grey Gardens
squalor in the frozen suburbs of upstate New York.
Tierney Gearon: The Mother Project
is a moving and intricate portrait of an artist and her inspirations. The San Francisco Chronicle
called it “one of the most
remarkable and layered explorations of family relationships, insanity
and the motivations of memoristic artists ever to have been made.” The
film premiered at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival and has been shown at
film festivals around the world including Full
Frame, San Francisco, the inaugural Cinema Rome Film Fest, Vancouver,
Sao Paolo and Thessaloniki.
