Expanding on our study last year of the “New Israeli Historians,” this
year the CBE Israeli history reading group will examine the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict both from more traditional
historiographical sources as well as the works of the New Historians’
opponents. For this election year, we will begin our study of Israeli
history from the perspective of American foreign policy drawing
excerpts from Michael Oren’s Power, Faith and Fantasy: The US in the Middle East, 1776 to the Present, and Warren Bass’ Support Any Friend: Kennedy’s Middle East and the Making of the US- Israeli Alliance.
We continue by studying excerpts from a recent biography of Yigul Allon
by Anita Shapira, considered by some the dean of Israeli historians,
and her conceptual work, Land and Power: The Zionist Resort to Force. We will also look at the work of Ephraim Karsh, a prominent opponent of the New Historians, reading excerpts from Fabricating Israeli History and Islamic Imperialism: A History. Stay tuned for more information. Materials for this evening's session are available at the Temple House front desk.
Instructor: Rabbi Daniel M. Bronstein
